"Wesley Chapel District Park has been at capacity for a very, very, very long time," Pasco County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources director Keith Wiley told county commissioners, as the Tampa Bay Times reported on November 1. Commissioners voted unanimously to buy about 153 acres directly south of the park. The county will buy that land in four phases over four years and hasn't yet identified how it will pay to build anything there.
That leaves the next few years to venues that already exist or are close to finished. Each one has its own way in: a membership card, an annual pass, a monthly fee or a weekend parking charge. Here is what each one offers, what it costs and when.
The park everyone shares, and the land that comes next
Wesley Chapel District Park opened in 2007 at the southwest corner of Boyette and Overpass roads as a $20 million project. It was built out in stages and now covers 145 acres. It has athletic fields, basketball and tennis courts, walking trails, an all-abilities playground, a street hockey rink and a 17,800-square-foot indoor recreation center added in 2021. The park is open daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. The recreation center is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., and it is closed Sundays.
The new land is called the Hopkins property. Each of the four phases covers roughly 39 acres, and the first is scheduled for fiscal year 2027, paid from the county's parks impact fee categories. A planned "vision road" runs through the parcel, and meetings are already scheduled to discuss realigning it so the road doesn't cut into future park improvements. "Without the land, you're not going to build a park," Wiley said. The county is also working on parks in the Villages of Pasadena Hills and Two Rivers.
For now, the existing park works on simple rules. When a field isn't reserved, anyone can use it for open play. Organized or exclusive use needs a reservation made in person, and county leagues, camps and co-sponsored youth groups get first preference. Courts at county recreation complexes can be reserved for free. Staff scan your annual recreation center membership card, and you can book the same day up to an hour ahead. If you play here, that card is the first item on the list.
Wiregrass Ranch Sports Campus is built for tournaments
The obvious overflow is the Wiregrass Ranch Sports Campus of Pasco County at 3021 Sports Coast Way. Wiley told commissioners the campus is more of a tourism asset than a public park, and that it doesn't meet the need the Hopkins land is meant to address. You can see that in the building. The AdventHealth Sports Arena is a 98,000-square-foot complex with a 70,000-square-foot indoor arena that holds eight basketball or 16 volleyball courts. Outside are five tournament fields and two multipurpose fields. The campus opened in 2020. Sports Facilities Companies was approved to manage it for 10 years starting August 1, 2025.
Under that management, parking is included with local programming Monday through Friday. Weekend parking is $10 per vehicle through Just Park, and event organizers set their own spectator admission. The calendar shows why weekends belong to visiting teams. Tampa Bay Super Cup Soccer is listed for November 6–8 and again for November 13–15, so the campus will host tournaments two weekends in a row.
Residents still have reasons to go, and most of them fall on weekdays or carry a set price:
- Run the Ranch Weekly Run, Thursdays from 5:30 to 8 p.m., listed as free. Dates are November 5, 12, 19 and 26 and December 3, with December 10 also on the series page.
- Tumbling Clinic: Back Walkover Basics, Saturday, November 7, for ages 5 to 16, $25. A roundoff back handspring clinic follows the same morning from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for kids who can already do a standing back handspring.
- VB Setting & First Contact Clinic, Sunday, November 15, 5:30 to 7 p.m., with registration through the campus.
- Breakfast With Santa, Saturday, December 12, 9 a.m. to noon, with breakfast and holiday activities. Ticket sales support the Wiregrass youth volleyball program.
The Thursday run is the closest thing the campus has to a free, drop-in community routine. On a Super Cup weekend, the November 7 clinic morning will also come with tournament traffic and the $10 parking charge.
The newest pool lanes sit on hospital land
The biggest new addition this fall belongs to a nonprofit. The Mary W. Sierra Family YMCA held its grand opening on September 28, Bay News 9 reported. It is the first YMCA in Wesley Chapel, a two-story, 49,319-square-foot building expected to serve more than 40,000 households. It sits at 4379 Wellbeing Way, at the southwest corner of Bruce B. Downs and Eagleston boulevards, right next to BayCare Hospital Wesley Chapel, on land leased from BayCare Health System.
Inside are lap and teaching pools, a family adventure pool, a gymnasium, group exercise studios and a wellness area. The Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA says youth sports, swim lessons, Kids' Day Out and group exercise classes are already running. Its program guide lists swim lessons for ages six months through adults, youth basketball, soccer and volleyball, and Lil Rookies clinics. Branch hours are 5 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 5 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. District Park's recreation center, by comparison, is closed on Sundays.
The Y also takes youth sports and swimming off a park that has no room for them. Getting in costs a monthly membership, published as follows:
| Membership | Monthly | Joining fee |
|---|---|---|
| Family, parents and dependent children under 29 | $98 | $75 |
| Two-person household | $90 | $75 |
| Senior couple, at least one person 62+ | $75 | $35 |
| Individual 30+ | $58 | $35 |
| Senior 62+ | $48 | $35 |
| Individual 20–29 | $45 | $35 |
| Teen 13–19 | $39 | $15 |
Nine pickleball courts, with a new way to book them
The next change at District Park adds space inside its existing footprint. Pasco County recreation manager Brian Taylor told Tampa Bay Beacons that $700,000 has been approved for nine dedicated, lighted pickleball courts on the park's north end. They will sit northwest of the tennis courts, across the service road from the recreation center. "In the entire county at this moment, there are no dedicated pickleball courts run by parks," Taylor said. "These will be the first at Wesley Chapel." Right now the park has two pickleball courts painted over its tennis courts.
The design groups the courts in pods of three. Between them go 35-by-15-foot shade structures with bleachers underneath. A 10-foot fence surrounds the complex, and 42-inch fences between courts keep balls from rolling into the next game. More parking is planned nearby, and players will use the restrooms in the recreation center.
Access follows the same pattern as everything else here. Players will need a $10 annual pass or an existing county membership card. Wesley Chapel will also test a new mobile reservation system so players can book courts from their phones. Because the courts are lighted, they can also host tournaments and organized programming. The project is in design. The county hopes to start construction in December and finish by early summer 2027. The future Village of Pasadena Hills park is planned with four tennis courts and eight dedicated pickleball courts.
How each venue lets you in this winter
Here is what each option asks of you, side by side:
| Venue | How you get in | Published cost |
|---|---|---|
| District Park fields | Open play when a field isn't reserved; organized use reserved in person | Free for open play |
| District Park courts | Reservation with an annual recreation center card, same day up to an hour ahead | Free reservation with card |
| District Park pickleball, once built | $10 annual pass or county membership card, booked by mobile app | $10 per year |
| Wiregrass Ranch Sports Campus | Weekday programming includes parking; weekends pay at the lot | $10 weekend parking |
| Mary W. Sierra Family YMCA | Monthly membership | $39 to $98 per month plus joining fee |
The free Thursday run at Wiregrass and open play on an unreserved District Park field are the only options here that cost nothing and need no card. The Hopkins land would add more free open space, but the first phase isn't purchased until fiscal year 2027, and no facilities have been funded.
How close you live to the Y, the District Park courts or the Wiregrass campus shapes your week in Wesley Chapel, and it's one of the details I pay attention to when clients decide whether to stay put or move within East Pasco.
